Westland High School Vocal Music Galloway, Ohio

Welcome

"Nurturing Musicians. Inspiring People."

Dear Vocal Music Students and Parents,

Welcome to the 2007-2008 school year, and welcome to the Westland Vocal Music Program. I have confidence this year is going to be one of the greatest years this program has seen in several years! If you are new to our program, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to one of the best things happening at Westland High School! If you are returning to us, I hope you will notice some new and exciting changes to our choral groups, as well as some new policies that allow us to continue to improve our program.

Once again, the program slogan for the year is “Nurturing Musicians. Inspiring People.” I feel this is a perfect way of expressing what we do on a daily basis and stating exactly what we want to accomplish as a program. We hope that our students becoming musicians that nurture the art of making music and inspire people by their performances. We also hope, as directors and parents, our students will act in nurturing and inspiring ways towards their fellow choir members, directors, family, friends, and everyone they come in contact with. My hope, as an educator and choral director, is to help nurture strong musicians, and in the process of making music encourage them to be inspiring to others in all they do. It is my hope that with some determination and effort everything we do, inside and outside of the walls of Westland High School, will echo our slogan “Nurturing Musicians. Inspiring People.”

As I am sure you realize, parent support is extremely important to the success of our program. Here are some ways you can help support your student.

Encouraging Parent. Competence is the result of dedicated "time on task". Music learning, music performance, and music appreciation are the outcomes of study, practice, and guided listening. With limited rehearsal time, it is imperative that students invest their time, both in and out of the classroom, nurturing their talents and improving their skills. Please encourage your student by urging them to be ready for class everyday and helping them arrive on time to every performance.

Loyal, Appreciative Audience. The best audience is always parents. You are faced with a full agenda in your personal and professional life, and you are challenged to adjust your schedule to accommodate every school function. However, your presence at our performances will mean more to your student than words can describe. Music is a family affair. Don't miss this opportunity to celebrate your student's talent.

Booster Membership. There are many ways to aid and participate in our parent support organization. Please join with other parents who realize the far-reaching potential of the arts and take advantage of the synergy created by sharing a common educational philosophy. This organization ensures the future of a quality Choral program for all students who attend or will attend Westland High School. Again, welcome to the Westland Vocal Music Program! It is going to be a year of incredible music making. The music program at Westland will continue to flourish because of a substantive curriculum, a supportive administration, and exemplary parental support. You make a difference! I look forward to visiting with you in the near future.

Sincerely,

Mr. Jeff Rone

WHS Director of Choirs
